Residential or Commercial Backup PowerWhile there are many options available to supply backup electrical power to homes and businesses using fossil-fueled generators, all share two features: they are noisy and they are not environmentally friendly. A better, green option is to use fuel cells that combine hydrogen and oxygen to make electricity and water. When run in reverse, this fuel cell will generate hydrogen gas from water using either power from the grid or a renewable source such as wind or solar. Simply install the system, fill it with water, and give it plenty of sunlight or wind and it will generate hydrogen gas that is stored in the system's fuel tanks. When the power goes out, the fuel cell kicks in and provides silent power for as long as hydrogen fuel is available. The cost of such a system is currently about three times the cost of a conventional generator-based system, but, as more units are sold and the technology becomes more commonplace, the price will come down to be competitive or even cheaper than the hydrocarbon-fueled alternatives.
