The MLRS Project
...or "What to do with a cluster of 3" PVC tubes"
Inception
I couldn't help myself. When I saw the cluster of 18 3" PVC pipes, glued
together on its way to the trash, one thing sprang to mind and gnawed at
my consciousness: Multiple Launch Rocket System. The thought of 18
rockets leaping into space at the same time made me smile unconsciously.
The thought of 18 chutes, drifting back to earth in unison was a
pretty picture as well. And, best of all, to think of the looks on the
faces of the surrounding spectators cinched it. The MLRS
Project was born.
Considerations
Now that I had the vision, I simply had to make it come true. Now I know
that usually it's not the best idea to base a project simply upon a
available materials. Instead of PVC, I'd have preferred metal launch
tubes. But that was going to be a part of the challenge: making it work.
From the start, there were several thing to consider:
- Would PVC be able to withstand multiple rocket launches?
- Would 2.5 ft. of tube provide sufficient initial guidance?
- What kind of rocket to launch - folding fin or subcaliber sabot?
- How would I launch several rockets at the same time - igniter circuits.
