SCORING

Like other games, Gemstone III awards points to you for good play. There are many catagories of points, but all are termed Fame Points. The main category is Family Fame, which is the total score you have earned with all your characters (in your current family). The death of your character does not erase this score as your next character continues to build upon it.

Family Fame

Obtaining certain levels of Family Fame can confer special status within Elanthia. There are a few elitist organizations that you may honor you with membership when you have earned enough points. These organizations sometimes carry political weight in Elanthia.

Deed Points

Your character must also, from time to time, earn Deed Points. These symbolize recognition by the deities of Elanthia of special deeds your character has accomplished. Deed points are very important as they represent a bargaining chip your character can cash in when he/she dies. Some deities in Elanthia will reward a character with resurrection if he/she has earned a deed point, though nothing is for certain when dealing with gods.

When you begin, you will have five 'free' deaths, deaths for which you do not need a deed point to be returned to the living. Note that, after you use these five deaths, or after you advance to level two, death without one or more deed points can be permanent. Your character can be lost, and you will have to roll up a new persona from scratch. You should therefore make a point of learning what service or services will be rewarded with a deed. Wise adventurers always have multiple deeds to their credit - a bare minimum of two. Adventurers who do not rarely live long enough to become wise.
