Names and Fame
Family Name
In Gemstone III, your character will be known by a first and last name
unique to the persona during his/her lifetime. Should you choose to retire
or reroll a current character, you have the option of keeping the family name
and just choosing a new first name, or of erasing the entire family line.
First, you are asked to choose a family name (last name, surname). The name
may contain up to 15 characters, including punctuation, with no word spaces.
Please note the WAY you type in the name is the WAY it will always appear,
that is, upper and lower case letters are distinctive.
For example, if you type your last name as "d'Chesne", that is how it will be
read. If you had wanted it to be "D'chesne" you would have to type it exactly
as you wish the upper and lower case letters and punctuation to appear. No
word spaces are permitted before or after punctuation.
Family Fame
In addition to allowing a greater degree of character customizing, your
family name serves a more important purpose. In Gemstone III, your character
brings into the world many things--the background of your early training,
your prejudices, attitudes, and capacity to learn, your calling in life,
and also your family history and heritage. Your heritage makes you
unique, yet part of an ongoing tradition of questing and adventuring. Your
personal and family fame are taken into account when computing Elanthian
rankings by totaling up the accumulated fame points of you and your
ancestors. Fame persists through all generations of your character's family, that is all
those having the same last name.
First Name
Your first name, or given name, is one that your character chooses for the
duration of his/her life in Elanthia. It may be up to 15 characters long,
with no punctuation or word spaces. Only the first letter will appear in
capitals. You can continue to pick the same first name for successive members
of the same family, though they are considered to be distinctly different
members of the same family.
A Note on Names
When choosing a name for your character, please choose one that fits into
the Elanthian context. Chip Computer, Astronaut Man, Bob335 and the like
would be inappropriate for Gemstone III.
